My top most useful Ipod, Iphone or Ipad apps for backpackers

I've been spending much time in the last few weeks learning how to use my new Ipod. I have been looking for travel related apps, that were useful, cheap (mostly free) and usable offline when possible. Having an Ipod and not an Iphone I do not get to use the 3G cellular so I do need a Wi-Fi network to use it online.

Calculator

- The regular calculator app that comes with any apple product is a useful tool, but others
are out there to help you out even more.

- Convert Units for free - This one is the best for converting either currency, area, lenght,
mass, speed, volume and many others. It's always free, and does an update on currencies
  whenever you get a wi-fi connection. www.freetheapps.com

Translators

- Spanish Free - helpful app to translate words or sentences both on and offline. Can be used
in free version and you can upgrade to a full version for 3.99$, which could be good, I just
haven't decided yet to buy the full version.

- MLD (Multi Lang Dictionary) - Another good translator, use it for free has evaluation to see
if you like it, then you can upgrade for 2.99$. This one can be used in many different
language, you just need to download the languages that you want. www.dynotes.com

- There are many many others that will do the trick, but many are not usable offline, that was
the main reason I chose these two.

Maps

- CityMaps2Go -  I find this one being very useful. You can download maps of the cities you
want to visit and can use them offline whenever you want. There is only one map available
in the Lite version, You can then buy the full version for 0.99$ ulmon.com

- Google Earth - Sadly must be online, but a very good travel companion. Pinpoints your
destinations and places to see. Always free.

Banking

- For this category I will simply say, go to the app store and find whichever bank you deal
with and see if they have an app available. Most big bank will have one. Naturally these
  apps must be used online.

Written Notes

Here again there are plenty of apps available for doing just that, just look it up in the app store, you should find what you are looking for. Here are the ones I like the best.

- Notes - The app that comes with apple systems. It's good and useful but lacks options.

- Mental Notes - I love this one, you can do a mix of all kind of notes you want or need.
Typed notes, written notes, drawing through your notes, you can add pictures and even
take vocal notes. All of this on the same page if wanted. Use it for free has a testing, if
you like it you can add sheets to ingrease the number of notes that you can take. (100
  sheets for 0.99$ and 250 for 1.99$ www.zymbiotic.com

- Moleskine - Use typed text and pictures all together. This app is free to use. I have not seen
  any other version. www.moleskine.com

- aNote Lite - This one is a pretty complete note taker, calender, where you can add maps
and pictures to notes. Set in the form of folders. I like it. This is the free version but there is
  also a complete version for 3.99$. bridworks.com

- Note Taker - This is the one app I wanted to find, I'm not so used to typing on the little
digital screen, so I wanted to find an app where I could do handwritten notes. All I need is
the special pen or simply use my fingers and I can write all the notes I want just like on
paper. The Lite version only allows I few notes to me taken, but for 1.99$, you get to take
has many has you want, safe them has picture files and send the by e-mail to yourself or

Books

All of the following apps are free to download and use. You need to buy your books online or use the ones you might already have in the apps.

- iBooks - Comes with the Apple system. From what I have seen, I love it, Easy to use and
good page set-up. I recommend it. Simply get your books online and away reading you are.

In this category there are many others but I will mention only the next two ones Kindle and Kobo. I suggest sticking with the iBooks.

Other useful apps

- TuneIn Radio - Listen to radio stations from anywhere in the world. Naturally you must be
online. You feel like taking news from back home, TuneIn to your home town radio stations.
   http://tunein.com/

- Alarmed - The name says it. It's an alarm and clock, reminder and timer. Many options to
choose from. This is another type where you will have a lot of apps to choose from.
  yoctoville.com

- Weather eye - That can give you the weather for anywhere in the world

- Free Wi-Fi - Find Wi-fi network that are free anywhere in the world. Many networks
available. Still alot of networks to add, but a good tool to have in handy. You can also
download the database on your iPod for whenever you will be offline and looking for a
  nearby network. http://itunes.apple.com/free-wi-fi-finder/

- Sudoku - Gotta pass time a bit once in a while. Tons of other games to choose from.

Naturally whenever you need to use your Ipod or Ipad try being careful while traveling. When you need to look something up, try finding a discreet place to do so, don't use it too much in open place. Most people are good, but once in a while there are others who would not care to steel it from you. So be careful but not paranoid.

Well here you are, these were the best that I have found for cheap so far. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know.

  1. Some of those apps are really great. However, I'm still looking for an app that will combine not only pill reminder, but also other prescribtions reminders - as sports and meal, maybe even something else. Looking for this one - appotek.com, hope it will solve all the issues.
